50 YEARS OF JUDGING BY BERNARD

Veteran Bernard Smith from Upminster, who was the judge for the second colour print competition at Leigh Camera Club on Thursday ( November 16), must hold the record for club competition judging in East Anglia. Bernard has now topped 50 years on the circuit and he is still one of the best judges as his efforts at Leigh showed. The best thing about Bernard is that he really knows about club photography, does not always insist on "following the rules" and looks at the image for its effect. He also brings a wonderful sense of humour to the evening with his tales from the past yet at the same time seemingly effortlessly getting through more than 70 prints with everybody able to go home in a happy frame of mind.

Because he arrived in good time the judging process was well underway by 8pm and this also contributed to a smooth-flowing evening. He also congratulated members on the high standard of work shown in all three classes, beginners, intermediate and advanced, and commented that in many other clubs his 7s would have been 9s and his 8s 10s.
